💡 Why Biweekly Works
There are 26 biweekly periods in a year, which equals 13 monthly payments instead of 12. That one extra payment per year goes entirely to principal — no interest charged on it — which is why it has such a dramatic compounding effect over time.

How to set up biweekly payments
Most lenders don't offer a formal biweekly plan, and some charge a fee for it. The DIY approach: simply divide your monthly payment by 12 and add that amount to each monthly payment. The math is equivalent and costs nothing.
Alternatively, make one extra full principal-only payment per year when you have the cash — a bonus, tax refund, or windfall. Use our extra payment calculator to see the exact impact of a lump sum.
One important check: confirm your mortgage doesn't have a prepayment penalty. Most conventional U.S. mortgages don't, but it's worth verifying in your loan documents.
